GPS - Phone
You might have heard of GPS and phones but are is this a real technology and if so, does it work? The answer is yes! You can use the GPS technology with your cell phone to make life easier and safer. Two of the leaders in this technology are Nokia and Benefon. Both companies have recently launched new phones that incorporate the GPS tracking service with wireless messaging.

Benefon has a new product called Benefon Esc!, which has the ability of displaying location that is picked up from the GPS satellites. Additionally, the phone is capable of doing everything a normal mobile phone would do but it also has the built-in capability of sending coordinates to your locate by using the wireless messaging.

Garmin is another company that is a hot player in the world of GPS and phones. They too now have a GPS capable phone called NavTalk II, which focuses on the European market. This particular GPS phone is very popular in countries such as Sweden and Finland where people are constantly using their phones for talking and for checking locations using the GPS tracking system.

While there are many new and exciting features being worked on for GPS phones, one that is especially interesting is a capability called location-based services. The wireless phones used today can now be tracked by police and rescue professionals should a 911 call be placed. The technology of today is designed so a caller using the 911 system can be found within 300 feet. However, the new technology being worked will reduce that amount down by just a few feet, making rescues much faster, thus saving more lives.

This technology has other purposes such as helping two friends meet at restaurant. For example, if you are in a new town and planning to visit a friend for dinner, he or she could send you a message with the exact location. The phone would actually provide you with precise directions so there are no assumptions. Additionally, this phone is reinforced with stainless steel so it is rugged and waterproof, making it an ideal choice if you love spending time in the great outdoors.

Additionally, Benefon has announced a new endeavor with a Finnish company called Arbonaut. The two are working on a software platform, which will assist developers in creating their own services. When it comes to the Esc! Phone, it will soon be offered in the United States although the price is not yet known. Until that happens, the only phone available in the US is a GSM phone like those offered by Cingular and Voicestream but that will soon change. Other technologies currently available that are not GSM are offered by Sprint PCS and Verizon.
